BEHIND THE SCENES

On-Set Stories & Production Secrets

Infrared Giedi Prime Arena

Cinematographer Greig Fraser filmed the monochrome Harkonnen gladiatorial sequence using modified ARRI Alexa cameras stripped of their internal infrared filters. Filming under real sunlight with specialized infrared lenses turned human skin porcelain-white and fabrics stark black in-camera without digital conversion.

The "Worm-Ride" Gimbal Rig

To capture Paul’s first sandworm ride, the crew built a specialized mechanical curved platform covered in synthetic skin called the “worm rig.” Suspended in the Jordanian desert, industrial fans blasted sand and debris at Timothée Chalamet while the gimbal bucked aggressively to simulate real momentum.

Austin Butler's Harkonnen Duel

Austin Butler and Timothée Chalamet spent months training in Kali martial arts and close-quarters blade combat to execute the climactic duel without stunt doubles, performing continuous takes in heavy prosthetic makeup and sweltering desert temperatures.
